Profiles of people have been captured in several famous photographs for decades. Portrait photography deals with portraying a person or a group with all their individual features.
A good portrait photograph achieves a non-conventional look by freezing the subject from a unique camera angle and in a mood that is representative of the subject. However, typical family or one-person portraits are also done and they are appropriate for family albums.
A ideal close up with a clear focus on the subject’s face is what gives portrait photographs that discernible mark of elegance. This is achieved by an old camera trick of making the background a little bit hazy and unclear so that the person’s face gets the best possible focus. A wider aperture used in a camera can give perfect results for this aim. One the other hand, it is advisable to click with a normal aperture if emphasis on the background is as important as on the person, which is usually true in outdoor photography.
Lack of perfect light for a good image is a usual problem faced by the photographers. However, some essential photography tips if sincerely followed can yield that ideal portrait photograph. One of the tricks is to make the individual sit close to the window such that the light coming from it falls on only one side of the face. To make sure that the other side does not appear shadowy, a reflective object such as a white sheet can be employed. However, Studio lighting can also be tuned to fit the light needs for good portrait photographs, and therefore a lot of photographers seek to shoot such photographs within the confines of studios.
The last but perhaps the most important feature of portrait photography is to ensure that the subject feels at home. If the subject doesn’t feel comfortable while being shot and doesn’t pose naturally, then even the highest quality camera and lighting methods can not ensure a good portrait.
