Taking up digital photography can be a fun pursuit, but it’s worth a little time to learn more about what’s involved before you start committing funds to it (photography can be an expensive hobby).
To begin with, that you need to become acquainted with in order to take great photos. Then you should also learn about the different equipment used in photography. That is equally as important.
To enjoy photography as a hobby, the easiest way to start is to get a digital camera. Why? Because it’s simply the most convenient route to achieving good results. With a digital camera, the number of pictures you can take is no longer limited by the number of rolls of film that you need to carry.
A roll of film can hold, at most, 36 photos. Compare that to today’s memory cards which can store hundreds of images in a small, convenient package. Memory cards can also be re-used whereas film can not. So an amateur photographer can spend more time taking photos and have the luxury of being able to experiment without being tied to the constraint of taking a maximum of 36 images.
Digital cameras usually provide a number of pre-set modes for taking pictures (landscapes, portraits, sports, etc) that the beginner can use until they learn how to take greater control of the camera.
Anyone new to photography is going to make mistakes. There’s quite a bit to learn about cameras and the different photography techniques used in taking great pictures. So, digital photography allows you to make mistakes at no cost. With film, you pay for every photo taken, whether it’s good or bad. With digital, if you don’t like the photo, simply delete it and take another one. And when you need a print, you can either run it off on your PC and printer or upload the image to an online photo processor.
