In order to successfully photograph your subjects in a studio setting, you’ll need to purchase a studio flash strobe kit. You can get started with basic lighting, but a strobe kit will provide the best results.
Not only are there many brands of flash light kits, but certain types are meant for certain applications. Daylight is often the preferred light, but not always available. That’s when you need to know how to really work with your lighting to create the mood and ambiance that you desire.
Very dramatic lighting can be achieved with either a continuous light source, or a studio flash strobe. Continuous light sources are going to be a more economical choice up front, but not so much in the long run. Strobes end up costing less because continuous lighting uses electricity, and lots of it. Continuous lighting bulbs also overheat and burn out much sooner than strobe lights.
The items that you want to look for in your studio flash strobe kit will be various reflectors and softboxes, two strobe lights, two tall stands for the lights, and a short stand. The short stand will be used to light background objects, or even to hold a small object.
The two tall light stands will usually hold the strobe lights. The photographer will adjust the height and direction to direct the light to add a depth of field to the photo. One light will typically be used as a fill light, while the other will be the main light on the subject.
Controlling light is also for achieving the mood they want. Soft boxes are used to soften the light that touches the subject. In portraiture, hard shadows are often considered distracting in a photo. The umbrella as well as the reflectors is used for directing or controlling the light in a studio or in an outdoor shoot.
Depending on the mood desired, the photographer can use an umbrella or reflector made out of different materials. For flattering portraiture, a gold reflector will often be used, as they cast a warm and richer tone on the subject’s skin tone.
A silver or aluminum type of reflector would be good for having a more surreal effect of the combination of light and shadow. The black side of the reflector is used to completely block the light that is coming from a light source or light that is bouncing from the walls or other reflective materials.
Most studio light kits also have a carry bag that you can store all of these items in. Typically each component in a studio lighting kit is collapsible and can be easily transported to your location shoots.
